Definition
Homework extends learning opportunities beyond the confines of the school day.
Purpose
The common general purposes of homework are to:
* Practice a skill previously taught by the teacher in the class.
* Prepare for an upcoming lesson by thinking about or researching background information prior to the lesson.
* Make up work due to absences.
* Make up incomplete work from the school day.
* Provide time for extended research and writing.
General Guidelines
1. Homework is for the practice, application, and maintenance of skills that have been introduced in class. Homework may be assigned to enrich and extend learning. Teachers should not include new and/or excessively difficult work in homework assignments. Assignments should not be made where pupils have already gained mastery unless the purpose is to review previous learning.
2. Homework may be assigned following absences when such work is necessary to enable the pupil to maintain an appropriate level of achievement.
3. Homework may be assigned to build upon and expand specific student interests.
4. Homework assignments should not be punitive.
5. Homework assignments should be reviewed with feedback provided to students.
Specific Guidelines
As a general rule, all students may be assigned homework four nights a week, not generally on Friday or preceding a school holiday. In addition, students are expected to read independently or have parents read to them for approximately 20 minutes daily.
Recommended time allocations for assigned homework are:
Kindergarten and First Grade 15-20 minutes
Second and Third Grade 30-40 minutes
Fourth and Fifth Grade 45-60 minutes
Middle School 50-120 minutes
Long term assignments, such as reading literature selections, writing reports and compositions, and completing projects, are appropriate. Long-term assignments are those which require several weeks or more to complete and should be organized in increments and monitored at each stage.
